Fever

Common Questions

Q : Why do small children get fevers so often?

A : Because children's immune systems haven't had a chance to fully develop, small children are more likely to get infections. Also, frequent exposure to other children can increase chances of picking up an infection. This is a normal part of childhood and prepares the immune system for the rest of the child's life.

Q : When should I call my doctor?

A : Call your doctor immediately if any of the following symptoms appear: oral temperature of 38.1°C for more than 24 hours; oral temperature of 39.4°C or higher after fever-reducing medicine is given; any time the temperature exceeds 41°C in children over 3 months (38°C in babies under 3 months); fever that runs for more than 3 days (no matter how mild); behaviour that is unusually fussy, sleepy, cranky or quiet, especially if the child becomes unresponsive or hard to wake; abdominal pain for longer than 2 hours; noisy or difficult breathing; if the child does not urinate (or the diaper is not wet) for 6 hours; convulsions (seizure, fit); inability to move or painful joints, or a stiff neck (child unable to look downwards); any confusion or hallucinations; any time you feel uncomfortable about the way your child is looking or feeling.

Q : Is an overdose of fever medication possible?

A : An overdose is any single dose or a total daily dose that exceeds package label recommendations. While ibuprofen and acetaminophen are both very safe drugs when used as directed, in large doses they can cause problems. To administer the correct amount of medicine for your child's age and weight, follow your doctor's instructions and the directions on the package.

Q : How do I get my child to take the medicine?

A : If your child doesn't like the taste of medicine, choose one that comes in a flavour that they like. Children's MOTRIN* and Children's TYLENOL* are available in several ‘kid-friendly' flavours such as berry, fruit, orange, grape or bubblegum.
