HeadacheTreatmentsTreating headachesIf a headache strikes, relaxation and/or sleep are often helpful. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as MOTRIN* IB ibuprofen products provide fast and effective relief of headaches (including mild to moderate migraine and tension headache). For your convenience, MOTRIN* IB ibuprofen products are available in three strengths including Regular Strength, Extra Strength and Super Strength. Acetaminophen products such as Extra / Regular Strength TYLENOL* are recommended by most physicians due to the lowest risk of side effects over the broadest range of patients. Treating migrainesMigraine treatment takes the form of prevention by avoidance of: triggers, treating acute attacks, and regular use of preventative medications if recommended by a doctor. During a migraine attack, early rest and/or sleep in a dark and quiet place can make the attack shorter. Medications can also help: Medications for acute episodes: Medications for prevention: - Beta-blockers
- Herbals containing feverfew
- Calcium channel blockers
Treating sinus headachesSinus headaches can be helped by over-the-counter medications aimed at unblocking the sinuses and relieving pain (e.g., TYLENOL* Sinus). Other treatments include breathing moist air, such as from a humidifier, or a hot shower or bath. Treating children's headachesAs for adults, children's headaches can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (e.g., Children's MOTRIN*, Junior Strength MOTRIN*), and rest. Migraine medications for younger children are limited, and treatment options must be discussed with your child's doctor. Children under 15 should never be given anything containing acetylsalicylic acid (e.g., ASPIRIN®), as it has been associated with the onset of a dangerous medical condition called Reye's Syndrome. |
