Dental PainTreatmentsFortunately, dental pain and its underlying causes, such as inflammation, can be treated. But until you can visit your dentist to determine why you are having pain, over-the-counter ibuprofen is recommended, such as MOTRIN* IB, Extra Strength MOTRIN*IB, or Super Strength MOTRIN* IB tablets. Ibuprofen is particularly effective for dental pain because ibuprofen reduces pain caused by inflammation and stops pain where it starts. If your dentist finds that your pain is caused by a cavity, the decay will need to be removed and the tooth filled. If the decay has reached the pulp of the tooth, extraction or root canal may be necessary. There are several options for treating gum disease. The first course of treatment involves a thorough cleaning of the teeth above and below the gum line (scaling and root planing) over several visits. If cleaning doesn't help, surgery may be necessary to further clean the root surface, and reposition and shape the bone, gums and tissues supporting the teeth. Bruxism can be treated through stress reduction, using a night guard, drug therapy or orthodontic treatment. Before treating the cause of your dental pain, your dental professional may give you a local pain reliever (anaesthetic). |
