Who is affected?

Influenza and the common cold affect all age groups and can recur in any individual. It is not uncommon for healthy adults to suffer up to four colds per year. Women experience more colds than men, possibly because of their close contact with children. People over the age of 60 usually have only about one cold per year.

You usually are not infected with the same virus twice because once you have been ill with a specific virus you develop resistance to it. However, there are over 200 viruses that can give you the cold or the flu and this is why we all suffer many colds throughout our lives.
